The Ministry of Interior has alerted people in the Kingdom about calls or other forms of communications from unknown persons requesting transfer of large sums of money to their accounts in exchange for the endorsement of the certificates for their degrees obtained through distance education or online study from any American university. The suspicious calls also display telephone numbers of the Saudi Embassy in Washington or its cultural attaché, an official said.
Public relations director of the Interior Ministry Maj.Gen. Muhammad Al-Maraloun said in a statement that the ministry received a message from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stating that the Saudi Embassy in Washington reported on April 26 that it received calls from Saudi citizens in the Kingdom about receiving anonymous calls requesting transfer of large sums in return for the endorsement of degree certificates obtained through online study in American institutions. The Saudis calling from the Kingdom added that the swindlers also threatened that if they refused to transfer the money to the swindler’s account, their names would be forwarded to the Saudi Ministry of Interior as holders of fake degree from US universities, Ajel online daily reported on Wednesday.
The embassy said the calls did not originate from its facilities or its cultural attaché despite the display of its numbers at the receiving end. It proved that the swindlers had employed some deceptive telephone applications with the aim of misleading people and extorting money. The embassy also directed the cultural attaché to warn scholarship students not to be misled by swindlers and fall in their traps.
